Local geology group gets deep into learning at Eryri VIP project site
The Eryri VIP team recently welcomed the Geology Chapter of Porthmadog’s University of the Third Age to the project site as part of its ongoing local community outreach.
The University of the Third Age (U3A) is an organisation that provides opportunities for people who are retired, semi-retired or no longer in full-time employment to pursue educational, creative and leisure activities in their local community.
On their visit, the group were keen to learn more about the geology that has been uncovered so far on the Eryri VIP project during tunnelling operations.
Hochtief Tunnel Operations Manager Ferenc Lavicska gave a presentation to the group, providing an introduction to the tunnelling process underneath the Dwyryd Estuary and explaining more about the work of our Tunnel Boring Machine, Buddug.
The group then had a chance to learn more about the geological findings and see for themselves the rock samples that have been excavated so far from the tunnel and during the construction of the reception shaft at Llandecwyn.
Christine Butler, a representative for the U3A Porthmadog group, said: “We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Eryri VIP project site. As a local group fascinated with geology, it was really special to visit a live tunnelling project and see the various rocks and minerals that have been uncovered so far”.
Ben Davies, Public Liaison Officer at Hochtief UK, who helped to organise the visit, said: “It was great to host such a passionate and engaged group at our Eryri VIP project site. We’d like to thank everyone for coming along and showing such enthusiasm for the geological side of our project”.
