Late-night shopping returns to Winscombe

National Grid supports annual Christmas tradition

Late-night shopping will return to Winscombe this year with the Hinkley Connection Project team playing a key role in helping to preserve the annual Christmas tradition. The team will support Winscombe and Sandford Parish Council with the closure of the Parish’s main road.

Every year, Winscombe shuts its main road to traffic for one evening to allow residents to safely enjoy late-night shopping and support local businesses. This year, the road will be closed on Tuesday 6 December between 6pm and 9pm.

After being approached by Winscombe and Sandford Parish Council last year to successfully support with the road closure, the Hinkley Connection Project team offered up their help this time round to ensure that the annual tradition could continue.

The National Grid team have been working with the local council to arrange the necessary permissions to close the road. In advance of the closure, the team will be installing advance warning notices of the road closure on the council’s behalf.

A big thank you to the members of the Hinkley Connection Project team who will be giving up their evening to bring some festive cheer to Winscombe

On the day of the festive event, the Hinkley Connection Project team will arrange for the road signs to be displayed at the closure points well into the evening, and will provide trained traffic management marshals to ensure the safety of pedestrians and road users alike.

Archie Forbes, Chairman of Winscombe and Sandford Parish Council, commented: “We are very grateful to National Grid for once again supporting our community evening in Winscombe this Christmas. The late-night shopping event is hugely popular with the local traders and all who come along to start the festive season here.

Jonathan Richardson, Corporate Social Responsibility Officer, said: “We’re delighted to see the Winscombe tradition of late-night shopping continue this year. It is an incredibly popular event that brings the community together and supports local business.

“I’d like to say a big thank you to those members of the Hinkley Connection Project team who will be giving up their evening to bring some festive cheer to the streets of Winscombe.”
