Temporary bridge installed in Congresbury

National Grid installs temporary access over River Yeo

National Grid’s contractor, Balfour Beatty, has installed the first of two temporary bridges across the Congresbury Yeo River.

Balfour Beatty and their subcontractor, G Works, worked together to successfully deliver the installation of the bridge, and the bridge itself was supplied by Groundforce.

The installation of the first bridge is testament to the professionalism of our contractors and their partners

The newly installed bridge which has a 50 tonne weight limit provides the access needed for construction plant and equipment to build the most northerly abutment for the main Congresbury Yeo bridge. The construction of the temporary bridge and accompanying ramps took place over just one week to minimise disruption for the landowner. WPD officials supervised the operation due to its proximity to existing powerlines.

The work to install the temporary bridge structure is expected to be finished in June and will provide Balfour Beatty with access to remove two 132, 000 volt pylons owned by Western Power Distribution (WPD) and to move the equipment necessary to build two world-class T-pylons.

Aden Precious, Project Manager for the overhead line works on the Hinkley Connection Project, commented: “The installation of the first bridge is testament to the professionalism of our contractors and their partners.

“The essential work to complete the bridge across the Congresbury Yeo River will help us build the next-generation pylons that will reshape our landscape and deliver electricity to over six million homes and businesses across the UK”.
