Yorkshire GREEN supergrid transformer deliveries near completion
The 200-tonne transformer will be transported to Overton Substation, completing delivery of all eight supergrid transformers to the new substations at Overton and Monk Fryston.
The transformer will be transported by a specialist delivery vehicle from Teesport Docks, in Middlesbrough, over 50 miles via the highway network to our substation on Overton Road. The delivery route will follow the A19, through villages including Birdforth, Thormanby and Shipton by Beningbrough before turning onto Overton Road where the Overton Substation is located.
The delivery, scheduled to take place in the daytime, has been carefully planned with the police and highways agencies to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum. Disruption is expected as a rolling road closure will be in place for parts of the convoy’s journey, and temporary parking restrictions may be required.
Additionally, temporary alterations to items such as road signs and street furniture may have to be made at some locations to enable the convoy to complete its journey. While we aim to carry out the delivery on the date outlined, this may change owing to factors like the weather and police availability to carry out the required escort. Any updates will be shared on the project website.
A National Grid spokesperson said: “Our thanks go to residents along the route for their continued interest, patience and understanding as the delivery phase of the supergrid transformers comes to an end. Careful planning and working in close collaboration with the police and highways agencies means we have been able to limit the potential for disruption as much as possible.
“Supergrid transformers are essential to our project to upgrade and reinforce the high-voltage energy network in Yorkshire and further afield. Upgrading the grid will help connect more home-grown British energy, supporting increased demand as well as boosting local economies, creating jobs, and providing cleaner energy from more affordable sources.”
