Supergrid Transformer delivery

Supergrid transformer to be delivered to new Monk Fryston substation in North Yorkshire

  • A supergrid transformer delivery will be made to an electricity substation under construction in Monk Fryston on Sunday 17 August 2025.
  • Once operational, the transformer, weighing in at 200-tonnes – will help to change the voltage of electricity so that it can be supplied safely to homes and businesses.
  • Part of a package of improvement works to upgrade and reinforce the network in the area.

An essential piece of equipment is due to be delivered to an electricity substation under construction in Monk Fryston on Sunday 17 August 2025.

Transformers play a vital role in helping to ensure the UK continues to enjoy safe and reliable energy supplies, stepping voltage up or down so electricity can be efficiently transmitted from power generators or safely distributed to homes and businesses via regional networks.

Weighing at 200-tonnes – the equivalent of 100 average sized cars, the transformer will be delivered from Goole Docks, East Yorkshire, on a specialist vehicle over 80 metres long under police escort and at low speed. The transformer will travel along the road network via the M62 westbound, A1(M) northbound and A63 before arriving at Monk Fryston Substation on Rawfield Lane.

This delivery will be the second of eight supergrid transformers delivered to substations in Monk Fryston and Overton, with four being delivered to each site. The first was delivered to Overton on Sunday 6 July, with further deliveries to the two sites scheduled to take place over the coming months. The delivery is the latest milestone in National Grid’s Yorkshire GREEN project, part of The Great Grid Upgrade.

Martin McGready, National Grid project director, said: “Supergrid transformers are essential to our project to upgrade and reinforce the high-voltage energy network in Yorkshire and further afield. Upgrading the grid will help connect more home-grown British energy, supporting increased demand as well as boosting local economies, creating jobs, and providing clean, more affordable energy.

“Following the successful delivery of our first supergrid transformer to Overton near York we are continuing to work closely with other organisations to limit the potential for disruption as much as possible. We have carefully planned the delivery in collaboration with the police and highways agencies, and we’d like to thank local communities for their support, patience and understanding while we undertake this vital work.”

Disruption is expected as a rolling road closure will be in place for parts of the convoy’s journey, and temporary parking restrictions may be required. In addition, temporary alterations to items such as road signs and street furniture may have to be made at some locations to enable the convoy to complete its journey.

Letters have been sent to local residents who may be directly affected by the deliveries, and Yorkshire GREEN’s dedicated Community Relations Team can be contacted by members of the community who have questions using the following contact details:
