Journey to net zero stories

Yellow school buses are US icons, carrying around 25 million students daily, but they are also big polluters. Mike Cooper, Director of Global Innovation at National Grid Partners, is working with our Clean Transportation team to clean up school journeys by helping to replace diesel buses with electric alternatives.

National Grid and the Town of Hempstead have announced a joint project to build one of the first and largest clean hydrogen projects in the US. The HyGrid Project, located on Long Island, will aid in decarbonizing networks by blending green hydrogen into the existing distribution system, and is expected to heat approximately 800 homes and fuel 10 municipal vehicles.

National Grid has partnered with Hitachi Energy in a pilot project at Richborough Substation in Kent, to develop and deploy a new solution to replace greenhouse gas Sulphur Hexafluoride (SF6) with a greener alternative.

National Grid has partnered with Siemens to create a free online tool to help UK ports meet their net zero targets. The tool will aid decarbonisation by helping ports forecast the future infrastructure needed to meet potential increased demand for electricity from zero emission operations.

10 Downing Street’s famous door is being lit up in celebration of the UK hosting the COP26 Climate Conference, of which National Grid is a principal partner. As part of our Green Light Signal initiative, Number 10 will shine green to highlight the country’s shift towards cleaner, greener energy.
