STEM volunteering in Electricity Transmission: engaging future generations

Recognising the critical role of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) education in shaping future generations, National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) has launched a comprehensive volunteering programme designed to engage employees with local schools and communities.

We’ve actively encouraged our employees to become STEM ambassadors, raising awareness of their work and sharing opportunities through various communication channels. To enhance our impact, we’ve established new partnerships that provide increased volunteering opportunities. Employees now have access to our ENTHUSE partnerships, which connect them with over 20 schools across the West Midlands and North West of England, as well as the option to serve as STEM governors. Additionally, we promote participation in Grid for Good programmes, further supporting our partnerships.

This year, we have prioritised the creation of a resource library to empower volunteers to conduct sessions in schools, equipping them with the necessary materials. Many employees have taken these resources into schools where they have personal connections, while others continue to support our partner schools.

Within Electricity Transmission, we’re proud to have 81 STEM ambassadors actively involved in a variety of activities, making a significant impact on young people. The feedback we receive is predominantly qualitative, with teachers providing outstanding testimonials about the students, our volunteers, the sessions delivered, and the quality of our resources.

Amy Ridyard, ET Responsible Business, Communities Lead, stated,

We are inspiring the next generation and helping young people to develop the skills, confidence, and mindset to build successful futures in STEM. There are also positive outcomes for our volunteers.

Through these initiatives, National Grid Electricity Transmission is committed to fostering a passion for STEM in young people, ensuring a brighter future for all.
