The Social Mobility Employer Index 2024

The Social Mobility Index (SMI) is the leading authority on employer-led social mobility and was created to provide annual benchmarking and assessments for employers. Where we work is as important as our schools for improving social mobility and equity.

Why is SMI important?

The SMI index celebrate organisations taking action to become more inclusive and accessible for individuals from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. Employers taking this approach will benefit by attracting and retaining the most talented people.

What does the assessment involve?

The Index shows how employers perform on eight areas of employer-led social mobility, ranging from how we work with young people to how we recruit and select candidates. The report also features best practice and practical steps that employers can take to improve social mobility in the short, medium and long-term.

The Index is a tough assessment of the steps being taken by employers to ensure talent from all social backgrounds can be recruited and progress at National Grid regardless of their background. A review of our report will show us what we are doing well, what we need to do more of, where there are gaps and how we can close these.

How did we score?

Last year we made a big improvement moving 22 places up, this year we continue to move up the ranks from 49 to 42, meaning we are one of the top 45 employers in the UK.

A full review of our report will take place and be shared with key stakeholders to ensure we keep improving year on year. To learn more about our ranking visit the Social Mobility Index website.
