Our engagement at COP29
What is COP?
The Conference of the Parties (COP) is an annual summit of all the countries that are signed up to the United Nation’s treaty to combat climate change- the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)- which came into being in 1994. It’s the world’s most significant summit on climate change.
National Grid at COP
Negotiations between governments sit at the heart of each COP, but over the past few years the presence of business and civil society has dramatically increased given that action needs to be taken by all of society to implement the Paris Agreement. We have participated in COP26, COP27, COP28 and COP29, and will continue to contribute to these global efforts to accelerate a clean, secure and affordable energy transition.
COP29
COP29 was held in Baku, Azerbaijan in November 2024. Seven National Grid delegates attended the summit to participate in events and demonstrate our continued commitment to and global leadership in the clean energy transition.
We partnered with the UK government, We Mean Business Coalition, Climate Action, and other UK, US and international organisations to participate in 64 organised events and many discussions around the energy transition. Our focus was on sharing knowledge and ideas to develop reliable and clean power systems, discussing challenges and opportunities for supply chains, and demonstrating the important role that innovation can play in optimising our infrastructure. Our hosted events included a roundtable and UK Pavilion Partner’s Reception in the UK Pavilion, two panels and a reception in the We Mean Business Coalition Pavilion, an energy industry roundtable, and a roundtable co-hosted with Barclays, SSE and TAQA.
