Our value - Doing the right thing

Responsibility
‘Doing the right thing’ is a key value within our company culture.
We believe that how we do things is just as important as what we do, and we’ve got all the right things in place; we have a Code of Ethics, policies and reporting systems. However, there can still be times when the ‘right’ thing may not be clear, or where we encounter behaviours that cross the line.
We encourage all colleagues to be aware of their actions, take responsibility for their behaviour and speak up if they witness or experience anything inappropriate. These tips provide guidance for what this could look like in practice:
- Before you act, think ‘is that okay?’ Pause and consider the potential impact of your actions and what you’re going to say. Are you doing and saying the right thing in a workplace context?
- Lead by example. Role model the behaviours you want to see; by doing so you’ll inspire others to do the right thing.
- Words matter. Use respectful and professional language at work and be mindful of how your words may impact others. Listen actively and show empathy when engaging in conversations.
- Challenge constructively and, in return, be open to challenge. Engage in constructive discussions and respect differing opinions. Be open to feedback and be willing to consider alternative views. And when you’re providing challenge, think through how the recipient might feel about your tone, words and timing of conversation.
- Be inclusive. Consider if a situation or setting is inclusive to everyone there. Invite people into conversation if they’re being left out and try to focus on creating the right environment for everyone to thrive.
- Speak up if something isn’t okay. If you see or hear something that doesn’t seem in keeping with our values, challenge it and, if necessary, call out poor behaviour as a message to others about what is and isn’t acceptable. If you feel comfortable, take someone aside to explain how their behaviour might impact others. Standing up for what’s right isn’t always easy – we know that sometimes it takes courage. Only take this approach if you feel able and safe to do so and seek assistance if you need help; we’ll support you any way we can.
- Own it and apologise. We’re all human and we all make mistakes. Apologise if you cause harm by saying the wrong thing and take it as a chance to learn.
