The UK has set a clear ambition for our country to be a global leader in clean energy. The Government has committed to reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and an ambition to connect up to 50 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind by 2030 – enough energy to power every home in the country.

The energy industry plays a key role in making this happen – from generating more power from renewable energy, to ensuring the infrastructure is in place to transport energy to where it is needed.

The decisions we take now, to make our energy system cleaner, directly impact the future of our planet. National Grid has a critical role to play in the acceleration towards a cleaner future, and we are working to build a cleaner, fairer, and more affordable energy system that serves everyone, powering the future of our homes, transport, and industry.

The new Kiln Lane substation will pay a crucial role in connecting cleaner, greener energy to the electricity grid, and providing power to thousands of homes and businesses.

About Kiln Lane substation

National Grid needs to build a new 400 kV substation near Friston to connect Scottish Power Renewables’ (SPR) East Anglia ONE North and East Anglia TWO offshore windfarm projects to the transmission network.

The Kiln Lane substation was approved for construction by the Secretary of State as part of SPR’s successful DCO application in March 2022 for their two wind farms - East Anglia ONE North and East Anglia TWO.

The delivery of the substation is a key part in supporting the UK wide transition to Net Zero and National Grid’s project, The Great Grid Upgrade.

To enable the construction of the new substation, we need to make some small alterations to up to 12 existing pylons on the overhead line closest to the new substation.

One existing pylon closest to the new substation will be removed and replaced with two new towers to connect the new substation to the transmission network.

We will also need to construct two temporary pylons, which will be removed at the end of the construction period, to allow the existing overhead line to continue operating safely whilst we construct the pylons.

The Kiln Lane substation will be positioned alongside two other substations, which will be constructed by SPR, and will also support important energy distribution.

Our link to other projects in the area

Whilst developing the Sea Link project, we made the decision to utilise the already consented Kiln Lane Substation rather than build a further additional substation. We explored other options to connect into the network, further details of which are available at the Sea Link website.

We understand that there are a number of different electricity network reinforcement and upgrade projects in the local area. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the construction of the Kiln Lane 400 kV NGET Substation, please get in touch using the project details below.

Alternatively, for other projects in the area, please use the contact information below.
