We’re proud to play an active role in the communities around us.
From volunteering and school visits to welcoming people onto our site, we’re always looking for ways to get involved and make a positive difference.
Schools and education
We work closely with local schools and education providers to help young people learn more about what we do and explore future careers.
- We offer work experience opportunities on site.
- We visit schools to share real-life examples of our work.
We’ve built lasting partnerships with local secondary schools. Students recently helped name two pieces of our machinery:
- Caroline, our Tunnel Boring Machine, after pioneering engineer Dame Caroline Haslett
- Verena, our Vertical Shaft Sinking Machine, in tribute to the first woman member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers
We’re also working with primary schools, running fun, hands-on sessions about nature, biodiversity and ecosystems. As part of this, we’ve created bug hotels using leftover wood from our delivery pallets—giving materials a second life while supporting local wildlife.
Community groups
We welcome local groups to visit us and see our work up close.
Recently, we hosted Aveley Men’s Shed (Tilbury) on site. We also enjoy getting out into the community—for example, visiting the Brunel Museum to talk about the tunnel we’re building.
If you’d like to arrange a visit or invite us to your group or event, our Community Relations team would love to hear from you.
Supporting local communities
We’re proud to support local charities and groups.
Most recently, we raised £1,000 for Thurrock Foodbank, alongside ongoing support for foodbanks in Gravesend and Thurrock.
We’ve also spent time volunteering with the Thames and Medway Canal and River Trust in Gravesend.
