As part of its plans, National Grid Electricity Transmission proposes to build a new cable tunnel underneath the Thames, which will deliver cleaner electricity to the area. The existing Thames Cable Tunnel between Tilbury and Gravesend is more than 50 years old and is coming to the end of its useful life. The proposed new tunnel will replace it and help to reinforce the local network.

Planning applications have now been submitted under the Town and Country Planning Act to both Thurrock and Gravesham Councils.

Politicians and leaders from project partners Elia and National Grid have met in Brussels to mark the interconnector’s fifth anniversary.

The 1GW subsea interconnector has the capacity to power up to 1.7 million UK homes a year.* To date more than 24.75 TWh has been imported to the UK and 4.25 TWh being exported over the link to Belgium. Nemo Link, which is a joint venture between National Grid and Belgian system operator Elia, is National Grid’s third interconnector and has already played a key role in energy security for both countries with an availability rate of over 99.5%.*

This is the first agreement for 125GWh/d of import capacity (equivalent to 3 million tonnes per annum of LNG) from Grain LNG’s competitive auction process which was launched in September 2023. The successful outcome of the auction further secures the future of Europe’s largest LNG import terminal into the next decade.

The Community Grant Programme was set up to support community groups and charities in areas where National Grid operations and site activity impacts local people.

The funding has been particularly valuable over the last few years due to challenging economic circumstances. Community groups tend to be volunteer led and rely on goodwill from others to operate and continue provide their valuable work to the local area.

The Hinkley Connection project stretches 57km from Bridgwater to Avonmouth, and will connect six million homes and businesses to new sources of low-carbon, homegrown energy, including from Hinkley Point C.

I’m proud of every moment that each team member has dedicated

Construction began in 2018 and is set for completion in 2025. The four million hours worked to date by teams from National Grid and its 12 specialist contractors have been put to good use. Key achievements include:

Over 2,000 grants have been awarded to local schools along the Hinkley Connection project to fund a range of STEM equipment ranging from new laptops to programmable robots.

These grants are intended to spark an interest in STEM careers and inspire the next generation of engineers, project managers and workers in many other professions that are essential to realising the potential of a low carbon future.

Building a resilient and diverse workforce is fundamental to this country’s net zero ambitions
