The settlement sits in a wealthy Roman landscape, not far from ancient lead mines at Charterhouse-on-Mendip. Daniel Connor, Project Archaeologist for principal contractors Balfour Beatty, said: “The site has a wonderful level of preservation, with archaeological deposits starting just below ground level. This has allowed our investigation to start from the demolition of the last phase of building all the way to the earliest phase of activity on site.”
All remains are finite and all too easily they can be damaged or removed without record. The information on our past ancestors, their beliefs, culture and ordinary ways of life can be lost without trace. National Grid is committed to preserving and recording the historic environment.

As the region copes with the impact of the virus, NGV has pledged support for some of Solihull’s most vulnerable people by donating 1900 face masks and more than 500 hand sanitizers to care homes and a hospice in the town. Marie Curie Hospice, Age UK, Royal Star & Garter Care Home and Jobs Close Residential Care Home in Knowle have all benefited from the supplies of personal protection equipment.
Solihull-based National Grid Ventures has kick-started the appeal with a £100,000 donation that will be used to purchase almost 400 tablet computers for patients that will allow them to speak to their loved ones while in isolation. The tablets will be distributed to wards across the Queen Elizabeth, Heartlands, Good Hope, Solihull and Nightingale Hospital, which has recently been established at the NEC.
In April, the company reported that the Shurton site achieved a year of continuous 'perfect days' on site. Linxon company awards this status for any day when no safety injury, security event or environmental release has occurred.
“Linxon Perfect Days recognise the efforts that our teams put into ensuring that people and our environment remain unharmed. The main reason why this has been achieved is because of the consistent focus from the Shurton team on maintaining high quality and sustainable standards on site,” says Claire Warman, UK HSE Manager for Shurton.

The plan has the potential to contribute to the future prosperity of the UK’s largest industrial hub, which contributes £18bn towards UK Gross Value Added (GVA), and to safeguard 55,000 jobs in manufacturing across the region.
