National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) is replacing underground cables along what is commonly known as the ‘electric road’ footpath in South Hinksey.
These works are essential to ensure secure and reliable electricity transmission for the area, meeting the demands of modern energy needs and supporting the country’s journey to net zero.
Initial survey works are expected to commence at the start of 2025, supported by the setup of a temporary compound. Following this, we will undertake the main programme of the works to replace the cables.
As soon as we receive clearer timings for our programme of works, we will be in touch with local residents and update this webpage with the latest information. Regular project updates will be shared online and via local letter drops. You can receive project updates directly into your inbox.
If you would like any further information or to speak to a member of the community relations team about the works, please use the contact form on our website or via the contact details below.
Our phone lines are open 9am-5pm Monday to Friday. Any calls received outside of these times will be picked up via answerphone and will be responded to the next working day.
National Grid is looking to replace cables in the South Hinksey area. The existing cables, installed in the 1960s, need to be replaced. The current oil-filled cables will be replaced with oil-free cables, improving safety and reducing environmental impact. The new cables will be able to transmit increased levels of power that is generated from renewable sources.
As the country moves towards net zero, new connections are needed to transmit the increased power generated from renewable sources. The current oil-filled cables, installed in the 1960s, do not have sufficient capacity to transmit this power and so need to be replaced. Similar upgrades are happening nationwide.
