Preparing for a net zero future

Preparing for a net zero future: helping society to decarbonise is the biggest contribution we can make to the environment. On this page you can find out how we are preparing for a net zero future.

In June 2019, Parliament went beyond the UK’s existing commitment from an 80% reduction on 1990 level emissions levels, to a net zero greenhouse gas emissions target by 2050.

The decarbonisation of the energy system is one of the biggest challenges facing our world, and we have a critical role to play in the acceleration towards a cleaner future.

In November 2019 we’ve made our own commitment to reduce our direct greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050. So, how are we going to achieve it? We’re looking at all sorts of ways to reduce our direct emissions, from reducing gas leakages to electrifying our vehicle fleet.

We don’t have all the answers yet, but we are working hard on establishing the pathway to play our part in a net zero future.
