Our climate commitment
Taking climate-positive action to reduce our impact
We know that helping society to decarbonise is the biggest contribution we can make to the environment. As an infrastructure business, our day-to-day activities also result in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We know that we can save money and help combat climate change by reducing our GHG emissions. This will strengthen our company by reducing costs and making our business fit for the future.
We are facilitating the move to a low-carbon network by supporting connections of all fuel types and technologies that will aid the transition to a low-carbon energy system. Once low-carbon generation is connected, we then need to operate the system to take advantage of it when the sun shines and the wind blows; consequently reducing the consumption of fossil fuels for energy.
We have an ambitious target to reduce our GHG emissions by 80% by 2050. We know this will be challenging, but we've made good progress so far and have already made our 2020 target; to reduce GHG emissions by 45%.
We're doing this by modernising our infrastructure networks, introducing innovative ways to reduce carbon across our operational assets and managing energy in our office buildings.
In the UK, we're starting to include carbon as part of our investment decision-making process. This means we can make sure that we fully account for the lifetime carbon impact of projects when we make major investment decisions.
We include a carbon weighting in the tender award criteria to incentivise suppliers to reduce capital and operational carbon. We measure the carbon footprint of projects throughout the design stage and have seen great reductions in carbon as a result.
We know that we can't meet our GHG emissions reduction target alone, so we would like suppliers to show low-carbon innovation in the products and services they offer us.
We've set a target to reduce the capital carbon of our construction projects by 50% by 2020.
- 80% reduction in GHG emissions by 2050.
- 45% reduction in GHG emissions by 2020.
Specific targets for the UK:
- Implement carbon pricing on all major investment decisions by 2020.
- Reduce capital carbon of our major construction projects by 50% by 2020.
- Increase energy efficiency of our UK property portfolio by 10% by 2020.
Specific targets for the US:
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save US customers money through our energy efficiency programmes.
- Increase energy efficiency of our ten largest owned US property sites by 20% by 2020.
