What are we applying for?

We are submitting a planning application for the construction of a new substation next to our existing facility in Iver. Our application will be covered by the Town & Country Planning Act.

What is a substation?

Electrical substations convert electricity into different voltages so it can be transmitted throughout the country to local homes and, businesses. They play a vital part in effectively transmitting electricity through our national system.

Why is a new substation needed?

This substation is needed to connect several new customers to our transmission network to meet a significant increase in electricity demand to the west of London, predominantly from new data centres. As a regulated business, we have a legal obligation to connect customers to our network when a connection is requested.  More detail is available here.

How long will the planning process take?

We are aiming to submit our application in December 2023, and anticipate a decision to be taken by Buckinghamshire Council in spring 2024.

How long will the substation take to build?

Following a successful planning application, we would expect a substation of this type to take up to three years to build.

When will further details on the proposals be available?

Our team is currently preparing detailed proposals so that we can share these with the public during the consultation, which will run from Tuesday 5 September until Friday 6 October.

What will be the impact on local residents?

We are committed to minimising the impact of our essential works on local communities. This included reducing noise activities and minimising construction traffic thought the implementation of a traffic management plan.  Further details will be available on this during the public consultation.  We are also committed to leaving a positive legacy where we work. Once details of our plans are confirmed, we will work with the community to see how we can support local groups and initiatives across Iver.

How can you feedback on the plans?

We will be holding a public consultation from Tuesday 5 September until Friday 6 October, where you will have an opportunity to have your say on the proposals.  During this time an online feedback form will be available on this website, and there will be virtual and in person exhibition events where you can meet the team and ask questions about the proposed substation. More information is available here. If you would prefer to feedback in writing using a hard copy form, please either print the form, which can be downloaded from this website, or contact our team using the details below.  We can also send you a form which can be returned by post free of charge.

How will your feedback be used?

All comments and feedback submitted as part of our public consultation will be considered and used to inform our proposals.  As part of the planning application we will prepare a report – a Statement of Community Involvement (SCI) – which will include and respond to all the queries and points shared. Your feedback will be used in line with GDPR regulations.
