National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) owns and maintains the electricity transmission network in England and Wales. We transport electricity from where it is generated, such as solar and offshore wind farms, to regional substations, where it then continues on its journey to homes and businesses.
To ensure that renewable energy is transported as efficiently as possible, we are working to upgrade the network in North Wales to meet increased demand for connections.
A new substation is required to connect new sources of renewable energy, manage power flows of electricity on the network and support future demand.
The existing substations in North Wales do not have sufficient connection capacity for additional connections, and therefore a new substation is required along the existing 400 kilovolt (kV) overhead line that runs between existing National Grid substations at Deeside and Trawsfynydd.
The Gwyddelwern Substation development will include the construction of a new substation on land along the A5 corridor, west of Corwen.
As a new development, we will require planning permission to undertake the work on the site. This new infrastructure will facilitate new connections to our network, including renewable energy sources, and will support future demand.
We are committed to ensuring that the development will provide a net benefit for biodiversity. We will do this by maintaining and enhancing existing biodiversity and building resilient ecological networks in the area once we have finished our project.
Surveys will take place to assess environmental impacts, including the expected level of vegetation removal and, as part of our planning application, we will also create plans that will capture the additional landscaping and planting needed for providing a net benefit to biodiversity.
Please get in touch if you have any questions or comments about the development by emailing [email protected] or calling 0800 358 1782. Our phone lines are open 9am-5pm Monday to Friday. Any calls received outside of these times will be picked up via answerphone and will be responded to the next working day.
