Temporary road a major milestone

Haul road between A38 and A368 will reduce construction traffic on local roads

Over Summer 2020, the two sections of haul road north from A38 and south from A368 met to complete the 8.5km temporary carriageway to service the undergrounding of cables through the Mendip Hills.

The majority of construction traffic for the cables stage of the Hinkley Connection project will now come in directly from the M5 via the site access on the A38. This will greatly reduce the number of HGVs travelling through local villages, including Lower Weare, Cross, Churchill and Sandford.

James Goode, Hinkley Connection Project Director, said: “This is a major milestone for the Hinkley Connection Project. The temporary haul road is a vital part of our measures to mitigate the impact of our works on local communities, by reducing the number of construction vehicles using local roads. It’s great to see it completed and in use in this section.”
