Who is my distribution network operator?

Your distribution network operator (DNO) is the company that owns and operates the power lines and infrastructure that connect our network to your property - our network doesn't connect directly to homes and businesses because its voltage is too high. Your DNO can help you with queries about connecting your property, power cuts or moving your meter.

What is the electricity transmission network?

National Grid Electricity Transmission owns and maintains the high voltage electricity transmission network in England and Wales.

We connect to industrial properties and to the DNOs who deliver the electricity to homes and commercial properties through their own network of power lines and underground cables.

Who is my electricity (or energy) supplier?

Your energy supplier is the company you pay your electricity bill to and they set the tariff for the electricity you use.

You can find out who your electricity supplier is and their contact details on a recent energy bill. If you don't have a recent bill, or if you've just moved home, you’ll need to contact your local distribution network operator (DNO).

How do I get my property connected?

You may need to get a property connected to a new electricity supply, or want to alter the connection to the mains, if you:

  • are building a new property or business premises
  • have moved to a new property and the electricity doesn’t work
  • want to move your energy meter.

To get your property connected to an electricity supply you’ll need to contact your local distribution network operator (DNO).

What is my electricity meter number?

Your Meter Point Administration Number (MPAN) is the unique identifier for your electricity supply point.  You can find your MPAN on your electricity bill.

If you don't have a bill, contact your electricity supplier or your electricity distribution network operator (DNO) to find out what your MPAN is.

How do I move my electricity meter?

If your electricity meter is in a position where it is difficult for you to take meter readings, or you’re doing building work, you may need to have your meter moved.  

It’s illegal to move a meter yourself.  Contact your electricity supplier or your local distribution network operator (DNO) and they will be able to advise you further.
