Essential maintenance for overhead line between Stanah and Hambleton Moss Side

Where is this happening?

We’ve carried out essential maintenance work on the existing overhead electricity line that runs between Stanah, near Thornton-Cleveleys, and Hambleton Moss Side in Lancashire.

Our work in Stanah

At National Grid, we are at the heart of Britain’s energy system, connecting people to the energy they use, safely and reliably. We keep the lights on so people can go about their daily lives. We’re working to build a cleaner, fairer and more affordable energy system that serves everyone.

The overhead electricity line running between Stanah and Hambleton Moss Side was over 60 years old, and the conductors (wires) had reached the end of their operational life.

So we can keep providing energy safely and reliably, we’ve installed new conductors and replaced the insulators, and fixtures and fittings along the route.

Our principal contractor, Morgan Sindall, coordinated and delivered all works for the project, including the reinstatement works that they’re currently undertaking.

Our refurbishment works began in January 2025 and were completed in July.

We completed various reinstatement works in September 2025, including planting hedges and replacing vegetation we removed so that our teams could safely access the overhead line and pylons.

We’ve ensured that all areas disturbed by our works have been restored to their original state, or enhanced, to support biodiversity. Our reinstatement programme was carried out under the guidance of an independent trained ecologist.

We would like to thank the residents of Hambleton Moss Side and Stanah for their co-operation during our period of works, and for respecting the footpath closures and traffic management measures we put in place so we can keep our teams and the public safe.

Keeping you informed

We’ve written to households, businesses and landowners throughout our programme of works to keep them informed about any impacts it may have on nearby roads, footpaths and other community amenities. We also put up posters at key locations along the route with project information and contact details for our Community Relations team for any enquiries.

If you have any questions, you can contact the team by calling 0800 279 3408 or by emailing [email protected].
