Essential maintenance for overhead line between Stanah and Hambleton Moss Side
Where is this happening?
We’ve been carrying out essential maintenance work on the existing overhead electricity line that runs between Stanah, near Thornton-Cleveleys, and Hambleton Moss Side in Lancashire.
Our work in Stanah
At National Grid, we are at the heart of Britain’s energy system, connecting people to the energy they use, safely and reliably. We keep the lights on so people can go about their daily lives. We’re working to build a cleaner, fairer and more affordable energy system that serves everyone.
The overhead electricity line running between Stanah and Hambleton Moss Side was over 60 years old, and the conductors (wires) had reached the end of their operational life.
So we can keep providing energy safely and reliably, we’ve installed new conductors and replaced the insulators, and fixtures and fittings along the route.
Our principal contractor, Morgan Sindall, coordinated and delivered all works for the project, including the reinstatement works that they’re currently undertaking.
What’s next?
Our refurbishment works began in January 2025 and were completed in July.

We’re now carrying out various reinstatement works, including planting hedges and replacing vegetation we removed so that our teams could safely access the overhead line and pylons.
We’ll ensure all areas disturbed by our works will be restored to their original state, or enhanced, to support biodiversity. Our reinstatement programme will be carried out under the guidance of a trained ecologist.
If you don’t see activity at a site during the reinstatement programme, it doesn’t mean we’ve stopped work in your area but instead are currently working elsewhere along the route. Please continue to follow any temporary closures on public rights of way or traffic management measures so we can keep our teams and the public safe.
A summary of the roads and footpaths likely to be affected can be found here.
Normal working hours will be from 7am to 7pm Monday to Sunday and 7:30am to 5pm on public holidays. Sometimes we may need to work outside of these hours to ensure we complete our programme of works on schedule.
Keeping you informed
We’ve written to households, businesses and landowners throughout our programme of works to keep them informed about any impacts it may have on nearby roads, footpaths and other community amenities. We also put up posters at key locations along the route with project information and contact details for our Community Relations team for any enquiries.
If you have any questions, you can contact the team by calling 0800 073 1047 or by emailing [email protected].
