Operational planning and real time control of the Great Britain electricity transmission network are right at the sharp end of the transmission business. Working as a Power System Engineer in System Control you’ll be key in enabling critical maintenance, asset replacement and the development of new infrastructure whilst ensuring the safe, secure and efficient operation of the transmission system.
Within System Control you’ll initially work in one of two roles:
On one of the transmission despatch desks you’ll be responsible for carrying out precise and intricate switching on the transmission system, including the implementation of voltage control switching programmes. You’ll develop and implement real-time solutions to real-time challenges. You will also actively monitor the transmission system and manage plant alarms from up to 100 substations.
Alternatively, within energy scheduling you’ll produce viable and accurate operating programmes aimed at matching National Grid’s demand forecast with the physical running data submitted by generators. Programmes are based on critical points throughout the day and also need to account for any forecast transmission constraints on the network. You will also be responsible for developing cost effective strategies to ensure holding of reserve and response are maintained at required levels.
Both roles will require you to develop network operating strategies and negotiate agreements with internal groups and external third parties, including Distribution Network Operators, Generators and Energy Management Centres.
System Control roles work to a 24/7 shift pattern with a 26% salary enhancement.
In addition to the ability and desire to work in a complex technical environment, you’ll have a degree or HND in electrical engineering or a related numerate discipline. An electrical engineering background is an advantage, as is experience in the design or operation of HV Power Systems. Recent graduates in electrical engineering should also apply at this time. Additionally, you’ll need excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrate respect, ownership, integrity, and teamwork.
You can be sure of an excellent salary and flexible benefits, relocation assistance, great training and development, including the chance to study with partner universities.
Success could also open up a world of opportunity across our international network.
