ENERGISE THE NATION

National Grid is the largest utility in the UK and the second largest utility in the US.  We play a vital role in delivering gas and electricity to many millions of people across Great Britain and the Northeast US in an efficient, reliable and safe manner.

We are committed to safeguarding our global environment for future generations and providing all our customers with the highest standards of service through investment in our networks and through our talented, diverse workforce.  That’s where you come in!

Operational planning and real time control of the Great Britain electricity transmission network are right at the sharp end of the transmission business. Working as a Power system Engineer in Outage Planning you’ll be key in enabling critical maintenance, asset replacement and the development of new infrastructure whilst ensuring the safe, secure and efficient operation of the transmission system.

You’ll be part of a team developing network operating strategies to minimise cost risk and maximise system security. This requires detailed technical assessment of the outage plan and you will use both system modelling techniques and individual judgement to assess the impacts on system security.

The role will see you negotiating operational agreements with internal groups and external parties including Distribution Network Operators, Generators and Energy Management Centres. You’ll be making key commercial decisions to minimise the financial impact of plan delivery.  Your work will form the basis of guidance and advice to the control room.

In addition to the ability and desire to work in a complex technical environment, you’ll have a degree or HND in electrical engineering or a related numerate discipline.  An electrical engineering background is an advantage, as is experience in the design or operation of HV Power Systems. Recent graduates in electrical engineering should also apply at this time.  Additionally, you’ll need excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrate respect, ownership, integrity, and teamwork.

You can be sure of an excellent salary and flexible benefits, relocation assistance, great training and development, including the chance to study with partner universities.

Success could also open up a world of opportunity across our international network.

Working with National Grid offers a wealth of career opportunities as well as providing an opportunity to meet great people. We value diversity and cultural differences, recognising the benefits of recruiting from all sectors of the community. At National Grid you’re not only valued for your talent but also for your individuality. You can be part of a great team and still be yourself!  We’re offering a rewarding career within an exciting industry and what’s more, we’re fun to work with.
