Our response to coronavirus

Find out how we're working to keep the electricity and gas flowing reliably throughout the outbreak.

Shaping the gas transmission system of the future - events

Our events in November and December 2020 will focus on tackling challenges experienced across the wider energy industry and beyond. Take a look at our programme of events and find out how to register.

Events in November and December 2020

Round up of priorities: 2 November

Each year we report on our performance and ask you what you would like us to focus on. During this webinar we asked ‘have your priorities changed since the COVID-19 pandemic?' We also shared our current plans for the next 12 months across all our stakeholder priorities.

Digital Strategy & Information Provision: 2 November

Ian Radley (Head of Gas System Operations) and his team walked through the proposed digital strategy including how to have your say to ensure we continue to deliver your data and information needs throughout RIIO-2.  Topics included modernising energy data, and the data triage process.

We also heard from Professor Richard Dobson, author of ‘Once we harness energy data, what will our world look like?’ who shared his thoughts, experience and answered your questions.

Building skills today for a net zero future: 9 November

Energy is a crucial area in the UK’s journey to meet Net Zero emissions by 2050.  People have mixed views of the role gas can play to reach Net Zero emissions.  We believe it has a real cost effective and carbon neutral role in the future of energy through biogas and hydrogen.

We need to attract a diversity of talent with the right skills and capabilities to enable the transition to a decarbonised energy system.

Isabelle Haigh (Head of Plant Operations) hosted this roundtable posing the question:

“How do we attract the diverse talent needed for the gas industry to achieve a Net Zero energy future?”

Reducing methane emissions: opportunities & barriers: 12 November

Methane emissions from gas equipment (venting, unplanned emissions and/or third-party interference) are a significant contributor to global warming and are gaining more and more scrutiny from government, NGOs and stakeholders.

Helen Tipton (Head of Assurance) looked across the challenges faced by industry and the opportunities available to reduce methane emissions.

We were joined by leading experts to discuss these challenges:

  • Accurate detection and quantification: Dr Paul Balcombe (Imperial College London) shared his thoughts on this area and signposted the opportunities and innovations
  • Standardised assessment processes
  • Innovation:  We looked at a couple of leading innovations in this area.  We were joined by Violeta Bescos Roy (Enagas) who talked through their latest innovation ‘CH4RGE’.  We also discussed MORFE (Monitoring of Real-time Fugitive Emissions).
  • Uncertainty around reportingrequirements

Heating our homes in a Net Zero future - Understanding what matters to consumers: 20 November

Decarbonising heat will be one of the biggest transformations that we have undertaken in the UK. Ensuring that we put consumers’ needs at the heart of our plans will be vital to its success. That’s why we commissioned research to help us understand what really matters to consumers when thinking about how they will heat their homes in a Net Zero future.

This webinar outlined the research, its key findings and our recommendations.
