EU network codes implementation

Implementing EU network codes will be one of the biggest challenges facing the industry in Britain over the next decade. The benefits from the EU network codes will only be felt once they have been fully implemented. A successful implementation will require collaboration, cooperation, and transparency between all industry participants on a national level, along with cross-border dialog and European coordination between TSOs and NRAs. We are dedicated to providing greater information and transparency to the industry, which you can find here.

Our implementation strategy

Each EU code (such as Congestion Management Principles (CMP), Capacity Allocation Mechanism (CAM), Balancing, Interoperability and Tariffs, et al) contains or will contain requirements for translation into the British system. It is for the transmission system operators (TSOs) to develop what the logical grouping of implementation phases should be in order to achieve compliance.

Rather than implement on a code-by-code basis, we believe that compliance can be best met through implementation phases. Each phase will have a particular IS release plan and associated UNC, licence, and process changes.

European consultations

We are invited to respond to a number of consultations relating to the activities of a European Transmission System Operator (TSO). Below is a list of those consultations that are currently open or have recently closed along with our responses where one was made.

National Grid consultations

National Grid and the other EU TSOs were required to implement the EU Capacity Allocation Mechanisms (CAM) Regulation by November 2015. One of the features of CAM is that cross-border capacity must be sold on a joint booking platform. The open letter set out our plans for meeting this obligation and we have welcomed all of the responses made. The consultation period has now ended, however, if you have further comments please contact us on [email protected]
