CCS Scotland

National Grid is part of a carbon capture and storage (CCS) consortium with ScottishPower and Shell U.K. Ltd developing a carbon capture, transportation and storage scheme. This will involve capturing carbon dioxide (CO2 ) from Longannet power station in Kincardine, Fife and transporting it to St. Fergus in Aberdeenshire for transportation offshore to permanent storage in a depleted gas field.

To achieve this, National Grid will need to install a new 18km pipeline from Longannet to join with an existing pipeline at Dunipace, in Falkirk and carryout modification to allow the conversion of an existing pipeline which already runs along the eastern side of Scotland from Falkirk to Aberdeenshire.  Planning permission will be required for:

  • new above ground installations (AGI) each approximately 100m2,  two at Longannet and one at locations near Dunipace, Kirriemuir, and Kintore
  • the change of use of the existing pipeline, this will require modification works at existing block valve and AGI sites along the route (near Gargunnock, Braco, Machany, Crieff, Chapelhill, Meikleour, Kirriemuir, Ruthven, Tigerton, Fettercairn, Auchenblae, Crathes, Garlogie, Inverurie, Tarves and Stuartfield)
  • a new 1.5km pipeline near St Fergus
  • a new compressor station next to our natural gas terminal at St. Fergus.

Shell UK Ltd will also be installing a new 1.3km pipeline around their terminal at St Fergus, for which planning permission will be required.
