National Grid has a dedicated Land Regeneration team who manage a multi-million pound programme to restore land to beneficial use. The Land Regeneration Managers work with developers, local authorities, independent experts and regulators to devise and implement strategic clean up programmes for brownfield sites.
Over the last ten years we have embarked upon more than 500 clean up projects. This has required an investment of over £205 million, resulting in over 1,500 acres of land reclaimed since January 1996.
In order to achieve such results, the Land Regeneration team has used a combination of established and new technologies to design the most appropriate clean up strategy for each individual site. The team is committed to the introduction of new technologies to enable materials to be treated in situ and recycled, minimising the use of landfill and reducing traffic movements.
During all clean up projects Safety, Health, Environment and Security is paramount and this extends beyond the site boundaries. National Grid has introduced a best practice safety initiative for local communities and contractors, which educates adults and children alike on the dangers of construction sites and road safety.
The positive impact of the team’s work is evident throughout the UK as hundreds of former gasworks sites have been cleaned up, enabling them to be redeveloped and returned to beneficial use.
