Information at your fingertips
National Grid Metering’s Smart Metering solution works by attaching an Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) device to your existing meter. This device picks up the meter's ‘pulse’. By measuring the pulse, the AMR device can record how much gas has passed through the meter as frequently as every hour. The information is then sent via mobile communications to our systems where it is validated before onward transmission.
Smart Metering gives you accurate and detailed information on the energy you are using so you can better manage your energy usage. Below is a simple diagram showing broadly how AMR works.

- Your Meter generates a pulse as gas passes through it.
- A National Grid Metering AMR device captures the pulse and records how much gas has passed through the meter as frequently as every hour.
- The information is sent via mobile communications to our systems where it is validated.
- The information is made available to you via your gas supplier.
