Case Studies

Many businesses are now receiving data from Smart Metering devices supplied by National Grid Metering.  These include:

  • Banks
  • Supermarkets
  • Manufacturing Organisations
  • Airports
  • Hospitals

...and many more.

Examples of how Smart Metering could make a difference to your business.

The examples below are fictional scenarios but are designed to give a realistic example of how Smart Metering could be advantageous.

Scenario 1 - Multi site comparisons to facilitate energy savings

Sample Chart

A large supermarket retailer owns a chain of stores across the UK.  Their meters are read monthly by a meter reader.  This tells them that in a typical month, their store in Newcastle uses around 25% more gas than their store in Watford which is an identical building.

A Smart Meter is fitted to both stores providing hourly data.  The reports show that there is a large increase in the amount of gas used on a Saturday between 10:00 and 14:00 in the Newcastle store.

On investigation, it is realised that the Newcastle store display some of their garden plants in the entrance on a Saturday morning.  To do this, they disable the automatic doors at the stores entrance and keep them open.  Because of this the store loses a lot of heat and so the heating systems have to work a lot harder to maintain a stable temperature.

Thanks to the smart metering reports, the supermarket is able to see how much this is costing them and make a decision to move the display further outside the store enabling the entrance doors to operate normally and a more stable temperature is maintained.  This results in a cost saving of £14 per week (up to £728 a year if this was a regular practice).

Scenario 2 - Validation of Energy Saving Initiatives

An office in Cardiff has an average energy bill.  Rising gas prices have been a concern to the company so, in an attempt to cut costs, they have introduced a number of initiatives to make employees more aware of the energy they are using.

With only a monthly reading it is difficult to tell how much of a difference these initiatives are making.  A Smart Meter is fitted giving the company an hourly breakdown of the gas they have used.  Using these reports the company can identify the initiatives making the greatest savings.  This enables them to concentrate their efforts on those areas that are making a real difference, which in turn could lead to even greater savings.

Scenario 3 - Synchronised Billing

The chief executive of a national fast food chain demands a final financial report on the last fiscal day of the year.

With National Grid Metering’s Smart Metering solution you can have this information to hand.  Our AMR device enables synchronised billing so you can obtain a snapshot of your gas consumption across all your sites simultaneously.  This allows you to produce accurate billing updates when you need it.
