World Championship Fight - Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) v Sonny Liston

25/05/1965

Effect of Clay-Liston world championship fight on System Load and Frequency

The fight started at around 3.30am and people either stayed up till the early hours to tune in or they set their alarms to wake up in time to catch the fight (no home recording devices in those days!) Because of this, electricity demand was up to 1600MW higher than it would normally have been at this time in the morning.

The 1600MW was just due to so many people tuning in when they would usually be asleep, not the boiling of kettles at the end of the programme causing a surge in electricity usage. Not many people would want a cup of tea at 4 o’clock in the morning!
