Electricity demand charts for England matches
Graphs showing electricity demand around the time of each of England's 2010 World Cup matches.
The usual pattern is for there to be a drop in the normal level of demand as people stop other activities and sit down to watch the match. There is a surge of demand at half time when people tend to put on their kettles and open their fridges. Demand drops to below normal again for the second half of the game before another pick up at the end of the match.
A 1000 Megawatts pick up in demand is the equivalent to 400,000 kettles being turned on or the output of one large power station.
