Essential Gas Engineering Works – Enfield

30/06/2008

Engineers from the North London Gas Alliance, a partnership between National Grid and Skanska have begun a five month project to replace 1.2km of gas mains in the Church Street area of Enfield Town.

National Grid is investing £70 million to upgrade 350km of London’s gas distribution supply network.  Part of this investment includes a £5 million spend in the London Borough of Enfield of which £300,000 is associated with the Enfield Town project

The work, taking place between London Road and Chase Side, is vital to improve local gas supplies and forms part of National Grid’s mains replacement programme agreed with the Health and Safety Executive to replace all metallic mains, with new plastic pipe, within 30 metres of buildings.

As part of this work it will be necessary to put in place traffic restrictions from now until the
4 July.  Traffic travelling north in London Road entering Silver Street and traffic from the town travelling east turning left into Silver Street will be diverted via Southbury Road, Willow Road and Parsonage Lane into Silver Street.

The bus stops outside McDonalds in Church Street will be relocated to outside Barclays Bank.

Mick Morris, construction operations manager of the North London Gas Alliance said: “We are aware this is a busy commercial area and are working closely with local traders to ensure any inconvenience is minimised.  Shops and business will be open for business as usual.

“The work has been planned in conjunction with the Local Authority and we apologise for any inconvenience the temporary diversions may cause, but the work is essential to provide Enfield with continued safe and secure gas supplies. The new gas mains will have a lifespan of around 80 years if left undisturbed once they are in the ground.

“As part of our commitment to keep traders and residents up date with the progress of our work we have arranged for bulletin boards to be placed in the local civic centre and central library where weekly information updates will be posted.”
