22/04/2008

Scores of learning disabled athletes from across the country are coming to Crewe this weekend for the Special Olympics Great Britain (SOGB) National Table Tennis Competition.

Coppenhall Leisure Centre, in Coronation Street, is hosting the two-day tournament which runs from 26 April.

A total of 95 competitors will be playing more than 350 games in the hope of winning one of 50 gold, silver and bronze medals. Ten athletes will also be using the competition as a warm-up before representing Great Britain in Austria and Spain.

National Grid, SOGB’s official partner, is providing volunteer manpower, drawn from its 80-strong SOGB Team National Grid, made up of company employees from around the country who want to be involved.  At the event they will help with athlete registration, accompanying athletes to their tables, processing competition results and event present some of the medals

Coppenhall Leisure Centre is also home to South Cheshire Special Needs Table Tennis Club and the North & West Cheshire Special Olympics Group.  The club runs two national competitions from the venue each year.

Special Olympics is a community-driven programme of local clubs and events open to anyone who has a learning disability.
