National Grid invites Yiewsley residents to get the lowdown on vital project to safeguard local gas supplies

08/02/2012

National Grid is inviting locals to discuss an upcoming scheme which will help keep the gas on in Yiewsley.

The project involves replacing over 2.4km of Yiewsley’s ageing metallic gas mains with tough new plastic pipes. Most work (1.3km) will take place in Station Road, with the remainder being carried out in neighbouring streets.

Work is set to kick off in the week beginning February 27 and it should be finished by late June. National Grid has agreed its project timetable with the London Borough of Hillingdon and has bought the work forward so it could be finished ahead of the planned town centre regeneration.

Some temporary traffic restrictions will be implemented to enable this essential work to be delivered. Parking bays will be suspended in batches of no more 10 at a time, along Station Road between the junctions with Colham Mill Road and Swan Road. Initially these suspensions will be on the road’s southbound side before switching to the northbound side as work progresses.

Cycle lanes along both sides of the route will also be suspended while the work takes place in Station Road.

Engineers also need to replace service pipes to some properties. To do this they need access to these properties and to temporarily disconnect their gas supply. Those affected will be notified in advance. National Grid would also like to remind everyone that it’s very important ask to see official identification from anyone before letting them into their property. For more advice call 0800 096 5678.

People can find out more about the project by visiting the National Grid information bus which will be parked outside 59-61 Station Road, on Wednesday February 15 between 8am and 4pm. Alternatively call 0800 096 5678.

National Grid project engineer Duncan Cooper said: “Our work will help ensure local people continue to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies for heating and cooking. People can rest assured we’ll do all we can to deliver this vital project with minimal hassle to them.”

The new mains will be inserted into the old pipes wherever possible to minimise the need for large scale digging.

This project is being delivered by the North London Gas Alliance, a partnership between National Grid and Skanska. It forms part of National Grid’s ongoing programme of gas mains replacement as agreed with the Health and Safety Executive.
