National Grid is investing over £318,000 in a vital gas mains revamp which will help ensure Waltham Abbey residents continue to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies.
The £318,000 scheme involves replacing 600m of ageing gas mains in Highbridge Street, from the River Lea bridge to the junction with Sun Street.
The mains are being replaced with tough new plastic pipes which should last for many years.
Work on the scheme is now underway and work is due to be complete by late April.
To reduce disruption for road users the new mains will be inserted into the old mains which will minimise the need for large scale digging.
Traffic management is being provided by two way traffic lights from the junction of Abbey View to outside the Waltham Abbey Church.
National Grid Construction Engineer Kevin Bending said: “We apologise for any inconvenience that this essential work may cause - people can rest assured that we’ll do everything possible to minimise disruption.”
He added: “Our work will help ensure the local community continues to enjoy gas supplies for cooking and heating.”
Work has been planned in close discussion with the local authority and the project forms part of National Grid’s nationwide mains replacement programme, agreed with the Health and Safety Executive.
Work is being carried out by the North London Gas Alliance, a partnership between National Grid and Skanska.
