National Grid invests over £700,000 in Ingatestone as vital gas mains revamp continues

27/01/2012

National Grid is helping safeguarding future gas supplies for the people of Ingatestone with a programme of essential mains replacement work to be rolled out over the coming months.

The first tranche follows on from earlier work and replaces 300m of gas mains in Fryerning Lane. A 60 metre stretch of the road from Haslers Court to the junction of High Street, will be closed for approximately two weeks, from Saturday 11 February.  Three way traffic lights will also be used in the High Street at the junction of Stock Lane. Access onto Fryerning Lane will be via Furlongs Way and Pemberton Avenue.

National Grid Construction Engineer Kevin Bending said: “We will be working in a very narrow stretch of road and require the closure for safety reasons.

“The road closure starts during the half-term holidays when the roads are generally quieter as we want to try and minimise disruption to road users.”

Work will then shift to the High Street where around 230m of gas mains will be replaced. Two way traffic lights will be used between the police station and the junction of Pine Drive during the work.

A further 120 metres of gas mains will then be replaced in Stock Lane. During this work four way traffic lights will be deployed at the junction with Fryerning Lane and Stock Lane for approximately two weeks. It is planned to deploy the lights during the Easter school break to minimise disruption.

The work is scheduled for completion in late April.

Mr Bending said: “This essential work will help ensure people in Ingatestone continue to have safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating.

“We apologise for any inconvenience our work may cause and will do all we can to ensure that it is delivered with a minimum of disruption.”

Work has been planned in close discussion with the local authority and the new mains will be inserted into the old mains wherever possible to reduce the need for large scale digging.

The work is being delivered by the North London Gas Alliance, a partnership between National Grid and Skanska.

The project forms part of National Grid’s nationwide mains replacement programme, agreed with the Health and Safety Executive.
