The South Holderness Countryside Society is giving a helping hand to local wildlife thanks to a donation from energy company National Grid.
The society has been busy spending the £700 donation on bird feeders, nesting boxes, bee nest boxes and insect homes at their Ivy House site in Hollym.
Coal tits, robins, greenfinches, goldfinches, long-tailed tits and other species of birds have popped along to the feeders for a “free lunch” of fat balls, peanut kernels and bird seed whilst the nesting boxes have become home to several pairs of blue tits.
David Constantine, who monitors the area as part of the British Trust for Ornithology Bird Atlas project, said: “The National Grid donation will help make this small corner of southern Holderness a better place for wildlife. The coal tits have been heard singing in the near by trees no doubt telling their friends of the free food.
The reserve has already seen a pair of song thrushes fledge at least one chick and I’ve heard a male blackcap singing since early April, declaring its intention to breed if a female also approves of the quality of the habitat.”
Peter Cook MBE, Chairman of the Society said. “We are already starting to see new bird visitors to the site and would love to see more human visitors. Our reserves are dedicated to the conservation of wildlife and are freely open to the public so please come along to find out more about our projects.”
Philip Knipe, National Grid Project Manager, said: “We are delighted to support the society especially when it involves improving the local community and environment so directly”.
National Grid’s donation is as a result of the close community links cultivated while constructing the new high-pressure gas pipeline between the Easington coastal terminal and the pressure reduction station at Paull, near Hull.
The South Holderness Country Society is a registered Charity dedicated to educating members of the public on matters relating to natural history and conservation: www.southholdernesscountrysidesociety.co.uk.
