The New Year will see National Grid begin work on an essential project to help ensure the people of Hornchurch continue to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies.
The scheme involves replacing 800m of ageing gas mains in Station Lane, Hornchurch. The old mains will be replaced with tough new plastic pipes which should last for many years.
Work is due to begin on January 3 and will start at the junction of High Street and then move down Station Lane.
To enable work to be carried out Station Lane will be closed between the junction with the High Street and Lloyds Bank, from January 9 for two weeks. Once the closure is lifted work will continue down Station Lane in 100m sections and end outside the underground station.
Work on the project is due to be completed in April 2012.
National Grid Project Engineer Steve Edwards said: “We apologise for any inconvenience that this vital work may cause and will do all we can to minimise disruption. Our work will help ensure the local community continues to enjoy gas supplies for cooking and heating.”
Work has been planned in close discussion with the local authority and the project forms part of National Grid’s nationwide mains replacement programme, agreed with the Health and Safety Executive.
Work is being carried out by the North London Gas Alliance, a partnership between National Grid and Skanska.
