National Grid staff send Christmas cheer to Leicester children’s charity Menphys

22/12/2010

National Grid have sent Christmas greetings to local children’s charity Menphys by raising £4,000 and donating unwanted children’s toys.

When Leicestershire Cares announced Menphys as their chosen charity for the “Collect for Christmas Appeal” National Grid employees at Hinckley and Warwick sent their Santa’s helpers to work in support of the appeal.

Tracey Mallett, National Grid’s lead co-ordinator for Leicestershire Cares and member of the Hinckley Community Action Team (CAT) enlisted the help of colleagues Stuart Sayles and Dawn Del Busso to co-ordinate events.

Tracey said: “Every year Leicestershire Cares selects a local charity to support and I was delighted to be able to ask the Hinckley CAT team for their support.  After all Christmas is a special time for children - what could be more appropriate?”

The money was raised by holding a quiz, tombola, cake baking, samosa sale and selling Christmas cards especially designed by the children from Menphys.

In addition to the fund raising activities a collection of three car loads of unwanted children’s toys was made to support the Saturday Club run by the charity.

Peter Coopey, Executive Director of Menphys said: “We have been astounded at the level of support and generosity from National Grid employees.  I went along to an event held at Warwick and my colleague David Peak went to a similar event at Hinckley and we were thrilled by the “buzz” and determination of everyone involved to raise as much money as possible.”
