Enfield gets £1.7 million gas mains investment from National Grid

19/03/2010

National Grid is investing over £1.7million in vital gas mains replacement work in Enfield.

Old iron gas mains will be replaced with modern plastic pipes which will help to guarantee safe and secure gas supplies for the area for many years to come.

The work has been divided into two projects, both of which will start from Tuesday 06 April.

Scheme A

This project will take six months and will take place in Hertford Road from Green Street to Southbury Road. Temporary traffic lights will be in use and some temporary lane restrictions may be required.

Scheme B

This project will take nine months and will take place in Hertford Road between Tyberry Road and Galliard Road, Lincoln Road, the A10 between Lincoln Road and Southbury Road, and High Street and South Street in Ponders End.

Temporary traffic lights and short term road closures will be required on the A10 and Hertford Road.  In both projects the traffic management measures – which are used for safety reasons - will be very short term.

National Grid will also be decommissioning its gas holders in Falcon Road, Ponders End, as part of the project.

Work has been carefully planned with the local authority, police and transport organisations to help ensure inconvenience is minimised for local people and road users.

National Grid Constructions Operations Engineer Michael Morris, explained: “By carrying out these two projects concurrently we will reduce the overall amount of time spent working in the area. We will also be inserting the new gas mains into the old pipes wherever possible, which reduces the need for large scale excavations.”

He added: “We apologise for any inconvenience this vital work may cause. However these projects will help ensure residents and businesses in Enfield continue to enjoy safe, secure and reliable gas supplies in future years.”

The work will be carried out by the North London Gas Alliance, a partnership
between National Grid and Skanska.

Anyone with any queries about the work can call our 24 helpline number on 0800 096 5678.

The projects form part of National Grid’s ongoing work to replace all metal gas mains within 30 metres of buildings as agreed with the Health and Safety Executive.
