Loss of gas supply in East Barnet (Statement 1, 20 Dec 09, 15:00)

20/12/2009

Around 600 homes in East Barnet are without a gas supply after water entered the local gas mains. The water is believed to have come from a burst water main which in turn, damaged a nearby gas pipe.

Engineers from National Grid are in the area and are assessing the extent of the situation. Meanwhile, the damaged gas main has been located and repaired and the process of pumping the water out of the gas system will begin today.

Every property affected will be visited to ensure the gas supply is turned off at the meter. Once the gas is back in the mains, a second visit will be made to turn on the supply to each property and make sure it is flowing safely.

More engineers are being drafted in today to help restore gas supplies.

An incident room has been set up in St Mary’s Church of England Primary School in Little Grove. Alternative cooking and heating facilities are being provided to all affected households and we are working closely with Hertfordshire Council’s emergency planning department to identify vulnerable people within the area.

At present it is too early to say when gas supplies will be restored.
