Gas pipeline operator National Grid is advising motorists of a road closure on Barrow Hill (B6090) between Harley and Wentworth, Rotherham whilst a £94,000 investment project is carried out.
The road will be closed from Saturday 24 October until Sunday 1 November whilst 1.6km of the old iron gas main will be replaced with new plastic pipe, which will last for 80 years if left undisturbed once underground.
The road will be closed from Dike Hill along Barrow Hill. A diversion will be in place along Barrowfield Lane, Burying Lane, Broadcarr Road, Sheffield Road to Harley Road. There will be no access to Barrow Hill from Mill Lane.
Residents will have access to their properties at all times and gas supplies will not be affected.
The work will be carried out by the M1 Corridor gas alliance, a partnership between National Grid and AMEC. Engineers will be using the latest technology to insert the new gas pipe into the existing gas main, reducing the need for large excavations and ensuring disruption is kept to a minimum.
Paul Sinclair, project manager explained: ”This project is part of a wider programme of work to replace 6.5km of metal mains from Chapeltown to Wentworth at an investment of £518,000. Unfortunately, because of the position of the pipe in the road, we cannot work safely while keeping the traffic flowing. Therefore we will have to close this stretch of road while the work is being done.
“The traffic management has been agreed with the Highways Authority, to be completed within the schools’ half term to reduce disruption.“
National Grid apologies for any inconvenience the project may cause and asks that road users are patient and work with us, so that we can ensure the gas pipe is laid as quickly and safely as possible.
