Around 20 members of staff from National Grid put down their pens, picked up their tools and spent a day at the Leam Valley Nature Reserve in Leamington Spa.
The volunteers, who all work at the electricity and gas company's head office in Warwick, armed themselves with saws, loppers, secateurs and plenty of enthusiasm and headed for the local nature reserve. Once there, they worked alongside the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust to prune trees, clear foliage and weeds and tidy pathways.
The team was led by account manager David Preston who said: 'The work we do to maintain and renew the gas and electricity networks can have a big impact on an area and we feel it is important to thank the public for their patience by giving something back to the community. We organised the day away from the office as a way of getting to know our colleagues and building a team spirit while, at the same time, doing something that would benefit the community. Our day in the reserve was hard work but very rewarding once we saw the results and we all enjoyed our day out in the fresh air.’
National Grid encourages its staff to take part in volunteering activities that benefit the community. The company offers its staff a package of support including volunteering schemes within paid working hours and cash grants for employees who do regular volunteering work in their own time.
