NATIONAL Grid has helped renovate an important community facility which is celebrating its tenth birthday with a new garden and interior.
Kemsley Youth House has a new look, thanks to staff from National Grid and its South East Electricity Substation Alliance (SEESA) partners based at nearby Kemsley substation.
Funded and managed by local housing association provider AmicusHorizon, the Youth House is located in Coldharbour Lane, Kemsley, It opened ten years ago after local people, affected by unemployment and crime, united to demand a safer environment for young people to meet. Today the Youth House provides opportunities for personal and social development including arts and crafts, an afterschool club and a mother and toddlers group.
After almost a decade of use it was decided to give the facility a much needed spruce up. National Grid and the SEESA team, with the help of its suppliers Sian Formwork, Fortel and FGS Plant, began refurbishment work on the Youth House in April 2009. The team were also supported by the Homebase store in Sittingbourne who provided materials free of charge.
The refurbishment has now been completed and Tina Miles who manages community projects on behalf of AmicusHorizon expressed her delight.
She said: “The support from National Grid at Kemsley substation is a great boost to the young people of Kemsley. We are all very excited; this is a really positive step for the Youth House.”
To celebrate completion of the renovation and the tenth anniversary Amicus Horizon will be hosting a party for the young people of Kemsley at the Youth House on 22 July 2009.
