Commenting on the publication of Ofgem’s Project Discovery report, National Grid Chief Executive Steve Holliday said:
“We welcome this very detailed review, which is a valuable contribution to the energy debate.
“National Grid is playing a fundamental role in delivering solutions to many of the issues Ofgem flag up, but it’s vital that energy policy helps us and the rest of the industry deliver through this energy revolution.
“The key role Ofgem can play is to provide the framework that can allow the huge, but vital, investments to be made in the timescales needed. I hope that the consultation around Project Discovery will help them come forward with a good set of proposals.”
Just some of the solutions National Grid is delivering include:
• current investment of over £2bn a year in our UK networks
• planned the strategic investments in the electricity transmission system that are needed to connect up future generation up to 2020
• published a report on how electricity supply and demand can be balanced with much more variable wind generation on the system
• applying its expertise in gas pipelines to Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) to provide carbon dioxide transportation for generators
• showing how domestic biogas has the potential to meet up to half of the gas demand from British homes
• developing a possible new electricity link with Norway that has the potential to be the backbone of a North Sea supergrid
• currently building an electricity interconnector with the Netherlands and developing another possible link with Belgium
• developed changes to complex industry rules on connections to enable generators to connect quicker
