Families at work can work

07/05/2009

Libby Purves, BBC Radio 4 presenter and columnist at The Times, this week visited National Grid headquarters in Warwick to lead discussion on Work and Life in a Changing World.

Libby visited National Grid to mark the launch of its Families @ Work portal, an interactive site for employees that offers advice and information on all aspects of family life. She spoke about family and responsibility and the recent changes in attitude about this in her own working lifetime.

Discussion focused on how real family experiences can make you a better employee; how coping with the pressures and strains of life outside work can make you better at dealing with stresses in the workplace. Libby commended National Grid for its families-at-work policies and support network.

The "sandwich generation", who are looking after children and also elderly parents, need particular support, according to Libby, and the National Grid programme has acknowledged this by expanding and renaming its employee support network from Parents @ Work to Families @ Work.
