The major programme of gas mains renewal currently underway in Cheslyn Hay, near Cannock, is entering its final phase.
New mains have been laid in High Street, Longford Road, Landywood Lane and part of Station Street. Further work will be needed to connect these new mains to the existing network.
Work due for completion in the next two weeks includes main renewal in Walkmill Lane, service pipe replacement in Station Street and the refurbishment of the gas pressure reduction station in High Street.
The next phase of the programme will involve further work in Station Street where the existing main running from the war memorial to Coppice Lane will be replaced. This work will be carried out in the early part of 2008 to coincide with Staffordshire County Council’s plans to resurface Coppice Lane.
Elsewhere in the town, further work is needed to connect the new pipe laid in Landywood Lane with the existing main at the junction with Dundalk Lane. In addition the medium pressure main in New Street will be replaced. Dates for this work have still to be agreed.
Steve Mullock, National Grid’s engineer in charge of the project said: ‘Demand for gas in Cheslyn Hay has increased considerably in recent years and this work has been essential to ensure the gas supply in the town remains safe and reliable. The plastic pipe we have laid is very durable and will last for up to 80 years and require little or no maintenance.
‘This has been a major programme of work involving the replacement of both low and medium pressure gas mains, many individual service pipes and the complete overhaul of the gas pressure reduction station. The complex engineering involved has meant that we have had to work in some places more than once. We realise this is frustrating for residents and I would like to thank everyone for their patience. ‘
