Open day at Bishops Wood - an opportunity to explore how local communities can be more sustainable and less reliant on fossil fuels

19/08/2008

Bishops Wood Environment Centre is inviting members of the public to attend a workshop on Thursday 18th September 2008 from 7.30 - 9.30 p.m. to participate in a facilitated discussion about how we can all engage in making our communities more sustainable.

Villages, towns and cities are starting to explore the number of ways they can become less reliant on fossil fuels and reduce their impact on the environment. Friends of Bishops Wood are hosting a meeting to discuss how such initiatives lead not only to measures that benefit the environment but also improve social cohesion and boost the local economy.

John Iles, a Regeneration Consultant, active member of Bewdley Baptist Church and a Director of Bewdley Development Trust, will give a short introduction to the workshop. He will discuss his involvement with a Marches Energy Agency (MEA) project, as part of the Grow with Wyre programme to support Bewdley, Callow Hill and Pound Green in becoming low carbon communities.

Roger Cook, a Consultant with Penmark Limited and formerly Principal Planning and Performance Officer with Worcestershire County Council, who has already led a meeting on this subject at Bishops Wood, will help to facilitate the workshop.

Bishops Wood Centre is situated just off the A449 at Crossway Green, near Stourport, DY13 9SE.  It is run as a partnership between National Grid, Worcestershire County Council and Worcester College of Technology. Set in the grounds of a National Grid substation and 70 acres of ancient woodland and meadows, the centre’s award winning building was designed as a model of good practice for ‘green’ architecture.

Head of Bishops Wood Centre said “Local groups and congregations can play a pivotal role in helping bring about change and local sustainability both amongst their own members and in their local community. We hope that as many people as possible will come and join us for this meeting”.
