National Grid, the UK’s largest utility, is investing £106,000 in improving Northampton’s gas network.
Work will begin on Monday 24 August on a seven week project to replace the old iron gas main along Harborough Road, from the junction of Mill Lane to Welford Road with new plastic pipe, which will last for 80 years if left undisturbed once underground.
The work will be carried out by Morrison Utility Services, working in partnership with National Grid.
A lane width restriction will be in place, on the outbound lane of the road for the duration of the works.
The gas pipe replacement project will take advantage of an insertion technique, where the new polyethylene plastic pipe is inserted into the existing metal pipe. This reduces the size of excavations and the amount of time we are in an area.
John Vogt, project manager explains: ”We have worked very closely with the local highways authority to ensure we keep disruption to the absolute minimum. We apologise for any inconvenience this work may cause.”
Engineers will need access to a number of properties during the work to ensure safe connection of gas service pipes to the new main. Residents and businesses will be notified in advance if they are affected, and people should always ask to see identification before allowing anyone in to their property. Access to properties will be maintained throughout.
